While the cities are definitely safer, I'm not so sure that the Uribe government can claim victory for making many of the more rural areas of Colombia any safer. As photographer Jesús Abad Colorado noted at a conference I attended this weekend, it his becoming more and more difficult for reporters, photographers, and researchers to travel to these areas, not less. This is not due to the presence of the guerilla or the paramilitary groups, but due to the presence of the government itself.

Since the mid eighties the coca plant has been cultivated in the Putumayo area and in the sierra de la macarena. Tha putumayo is considered part of the amazon region and the sierra de la macarena has a very similar ecosystem. In consecuence, there is no need of a "transgenic" coca plant in order to start growing it in Brazil.
